Every so often, just as it seems we’ve got him pegged, Dan Hudson veers off, onto the next thing, a new place, another experience. In recent years he’s gained notoriety behind the lens, earning senior photographer rank at Snowboarder and a rep for nailing big shots. But that’s not where Dan Hudson’s life first got interesting. Not even close. He’d already ventured in several directions before ever getting serious with a camera. Don’t let him fool you—he’s older than you think. He’s not done, either. Making art out of life requires constant exposure to the new.
Hudson’s a photographer, a writer and a mountaineer. He’s one hell of an athlete, a serious backcountry rider, an occasional food critic and, not least, a whisky snob, having hipped none other than the late Craig Kelly to the merits of a splash of single malt on a cold winter’s night. He’s thoughtful and humble, and intent on making sure whomever he’s with has a good time. He’s Canadian, after all. Whether freeriding with friends or working in the backcountry with top pros to deliver the photographic goods, “what’s most important is that everyone has a good day out,” says Hudson.
